In 1974, photographer Chris Hunt lived in Beeton Grove – a short cul-de-sac of terraced houses in Longsight, close to Manchester city centre. Fascinated by his neighbours – a mix of English, Irish, Pakistani and Cypriot families – he decided to record their lives. Armed with a tape recorder and camera, he created a unique picture of life in a working class street during the austerity years of the 1970s.
Beeton Grove is an important record of time and place. Chris Hunt had the foresight not only to photograph his neighbours but to record them talk honestly and frankly about their lives and hopes.
