Description
The grim discovery of an unidentified, mutilated human trunk on the banks of the River Severn in 1938, heralded the start of one of the nation's most sinister and infamous murder cases. A second related discovery, of the gassed body of gigolo Brian Sullivan, triggered an investigation that was to uncover a web of salacious intrigue, involving rumours of an illegal abortion racket, illicit homosexual liaisons, treachery and blackmail. Variously dubbed 'The Case of the Sawn-up Man' and 'The Case of the Thousand Clues', the investigation into the dark deeds surrounding Tower Lodge and the unholy trio of Brian Sullivan, Nurse Sullivan and Captain Butt gripped the imagination of the whole country and it is easy to see why in this detailed and fascinating exploration of those events.
No clear motive, cause of death or indeed any positive identification was ever made and the culprit of this hideous piece of butchery remains unknown. In The Great British Torso Mystery renowned crime-writer Richard Whittington-Egan reshuffles the maze of conflicting uncertainties surrounding both suspicious deaths and, in doing so, opens up the possible explanations at the centre of this sensational murder mystery.
